The Joan M. Durante Park is the result of a private/public partnership to enhance and restore one of the few remaining vacant island properties on Longboat Key to a viable wetland and coastal hammock forest. The 32 acre site is located on Sarasota Bay two miles from the north end of Longboat Key. The site had previously been developed with cabins, these had been demolished and invasive exotic vegetation had taken over the site by the time the Town acquired it in the late eighties. You will be able to log three caches in this great park. (The other is Pick a Knick-Knack at N 27° 24.933 W 082° 39.350) and (The Trees have Eyes at N 27° 24.828 W 082° 39.580 ) The cache is now in a camouflaged pill bottle. Take some time to check out the fiddler crabs and other wildlife. Most of this section of the park was constructed with recycled plastics for the boardwalks, bridges, etc. Enjoy!
