Geocache Description:

Don't Take Your Eyes Off The Road.

Indian Meridian

High in the Arbuckle Mountains, east of Duncan, stands “Initial Point," the most important U.S. Geodetic survey mark for all of Oklahoma except the Panhandle. It is used as far north as South Dakota and by southwestern states.

INITIAL POINT is a survey mark established in 1870 by Ehud N. Darling for the U.S. Land Office in the center of the Chickasaw Nation.

Darling was surveying from Kansas to Texas the lands of the Choctaw and Chickasaw nations as described in the treaty of June 22, 1855. By the treaty of April 28, 1866, these Indians agreed to the survey and subdivision of their land east of the 98th meridian, using the public-land survey system of the United States.

From that point a principal meridian and a base line (known as Indian Meridian and Base Line) were established. After that point was established, the land was divided into Townships north and south, and Ranges east and west. All farms, town lots, and oil wells in Oklahoma east of the panhandle, are designated from Indian Meridian and Base Line.

East of the meridian is Iowa Indian Reservation opened for settlement September 22, 1891.

West of the meridian are the Unassigned Lands opened for settlement April 22, 1889 (The Oklahoma Land Run).

At this point of the meridian served as the main road between Guthrie and Stillwater in the early 1890s.
