Geocache Description:

This is a very small cemetery in an isolated part of the county. Park your vehicle outside the stone walls and enter through the gate.

One of Charlotte’s famous names is that of DAVIDSON. A Scotch Irish, Presbyterian name that came to the Area in the 1700’s. Some of these men were politicians, teachers and some were military men like Major John Davidson, a pioneer foundry man whose large home was among the first to be built along the Catawba River. It was built in 1788 and burned in 1886 however another home was built in its place and across the road in front of the house was the Davidson Family graveyard. Another family member was that of General William Lee Davidson who died at Cowan’s ford in a river crossing battle against Lord Cornwallis’s British troops in 1781. Davidson College is named after General Davidson as is a street in Charlotte.

Another Davidson is E.L.Baxter Davidson who was a real estate Mogul. He was the first philanthropist to donate property to Davidson College valued at more than a million dollars. Locally, he was known as the Davidson who built walls and monuments. He walled in the area of Hopewell Church near Latta house on Beatties Ford Road with field stones and flint from the river. He also erected a monument at the intersection of Beatties Ford and Neck Rd., erected mile markers all over Charlotte and Enclosed the Davidson family cemetery on Neck Road.
