Located near Sandy Gap in the Unicoi Mountains on the Sled Runner Hiking Trail
UPDATED CO-ORDS!!! 35 15.449N by 084 12.227W This cache is located on the NC/TN border very near "The Sandy Gap". It is just down the Sled Runner Trail from the parking area at the gap, and no more than a three or four minute hike. The climb is not hard, but it will be a long drive from the nearest town up a fairly long back country MOUNTAIN road! That is the beauty of this cache. Once you get there it is not too hard, but the drive in is well worth it. It will be harder to find the road on a map than to find the cache. When you go, be sure to take a few minutes and enjoy the stream. A good place to sit and soak your feet is N.35*15.091 / W084*12.661. There are also some very nice back country/primitive camping spots along the road/stream just before you get to the gap. Make a weekend of it if you can! If you go in the fall, remember that this area is a favorite for local hunters, and dress/act accordingly. (Wear orange) The cache is a 3 quart round rubbermaid container that contains the following.-two small bars of soap-a votive candle_a pack of matches-notepad and pen in a baggieEnjoy the true wilderness with this cache. The elevation is pretty high for this area, and some of the views you will see while you are driving in are as good as some of those in the Smokies. The highway from Murphy actually follows the original Trail of Tears of Cherokee Indian infamy.ps. This cache was raided and plunder sometime last fall. I went on Easter Sunday 2004, and replaced with an identiczl container, and moved it to a new location approximately 500 feet away. The co-ords listed above are the co-ords for the new hiding spot. It is farther away from the parking area, and less likely to be plundered by drunks and ner' do wells.
