Near Rainbow Falls in Hilo, Hawaii
Over the Rainbow Falls has been updated for 2006. The cache
is now a small Rubbermaid container that is covered in camouflage
tape. It is a fine size for most Travel Bugs, and it is a fine
place for them to hang out in the islands! To keep with the theme
of the original cache placed by 'island paddler', you should start
out at the same spot, on the overlook above the falls at: N 19
43.147, W 155 06.562.
From there things are quite a bit different. The first part of the
trek is going to be without GPS signal since you need to wander
under the large Banyan trees until you find the narrow path through
the solid lava rocks... From there meander down the path until you
come out on the plateau on the bank of the Wailuku river. Once
there you can see the sky (and satellite net) once again. There may
be lots of folks around here as this is a hidden spot where locals
come to swim. Be careful, as you will see there is unusual terrain
on the way to the site. The cache is pretty tough to see with the
camo. tape but then again... you don't want it to be too easy do
you? :-)
Do not get too close to the edge of the falls please. You do
not have to cross any running water to find the cache. If the
river is extremely high you may not be able to get to the cache.
