Geocache Description:

"Fifteen men on the dead man's chest-- Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!"-- Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson

While looking through the pages of an old book we picked up at a yard sale, we came across a folded sheet of paper, yellowed with age. After carefully unfolding it these words were revealed:

As I don't have much time left on this earth, I must tell this secret I have been carrying for many years. In my youth I fell in with a bunch of scoundrels. We sailed on a ship out of Halifax and did some unspeakable things. Manys a ship we plundered and lived like kings for quite a spell.
One night a terrible storm rose up with fog as thick as soup. We were about 14 miles East of Devil's Island. We ran aground on a reef and all hands were lost, save me. I managed to salvage a small bit of our booty and hid it in some nearby woods, a mile to the West of a long white sandy beach. In all these years I've been afraid to return, for fear the ghosts of my crew are guarding the loot.
The Captain's Hook will point the way. But 125 paces more or less is where it lay.
Signed Jack Tarr, Jan. 15, 1806.

The note seemed genuine so we thought we would try to find this old pirates booty. We determined that the "Captain's Hook" he mentioned is at the coordinates listed above, and 1 pace is equal to 0.75 metres. As yet we haven't found it. Maybe some brave geocachers are willing to try.

A few suggestions: The best route to take is along the shoreline as to avoid any private property conflicts. Following the shore all the way is your best bet. Prepare for a walk of about 2 km along a rocky beach. Sturdy footwear recommended. You can determine the final coordinates before you leave home or else learn the project a waypoint feature of your GPS unit.
