*gln: ARCHIVING ABANDONED CACHE

Greetings DustyJacket,

Looks like our timing is off and It’s time to say goodbye to this cache.

Since I haven't any maintenance here in a very long time, I am going to assume that your priorities have changed and you’ve gone in a different direction.

Archiving due to lack of maintenance is permanent.
CACHE ARCHIVAL IS PERMANENT.

Let me know if I can be of assistance in the future.

Thanks a MILLION for all you have done, Glenn

Geocache Description:

DustyJacket's first cache: A long walk, or short drive, depending if the gate is locked.

Dusty Cache #1 - The Long Walk
Please replace in the same spot and conceal well.

This is the first cache I have hidden.
(Constructive criticism welcome)

This cache placement has been appoved by Jackson County Parks and Recreation.

This cache is a long walk around a group camping area. The foot trail, starting near the end of the dirt road leading into the area is where I parked my first time here.

There is parking at the gate on the dirt road leading to this area.
When the gates are closed, park in the parking area at the gates. You will then have a (½ mile) hike to the trailhead near the end of the dirt road.

Trailhead:
38° 58.123N
094° 20.109W

If the gates are open, that means that people are camping there (come back later or be real stealthy), or they have left and the Ranger will eventually be showing up to lock the gates. Some Rangers will check for cars down that dirt road, and buzz their siren until you show up to drive your car out. Other might just lock the gate without checking. If so, you are trapped.

Probably, the best thing is to park at the gates and do the 8 minute hike, or even bring a bike or motorcycle.
The Park Ranger I talked to assured me we can be hiking around, even when the gates are locked.

The ground is sloping; footing is loose rock, leaves, and debris from the ice storm. The is one strand of broken, rusty, barbed wire attached to a tree and hanging loose. I tried to put it out of the way, but be careful. It is in the last 10-15 feet of the cache. It ripped the leg off my pants during my scouting trip.
Lots of downed trees, now (in October 2003).

I reduced the terrain rating by 1 and the difficulty by 1.5 based on feedback

Older children should love this place. Lots of rock walls to investigate. You can watch the boats passing by on the lake.

In warm weather there are ticks about - during my scouting mission, I did not use bug spray, and I cut across the grassy camping area. I returned covered with ticks. Today, I used permethrin on my clothes and DEET on my skin. I only had 3 ticks on my clothes, and one had died already.

The cache is a large ammo box (.50 cal)

The items to be left in the cache are: a First Aid kit with wipes and band-aids, and a logbook to sign, and a pen and pencil, all in a ziplock bag.

The initial trade contents are some DustyJacket buttons, a few silver coins (dollars and halves), a yo-yo, a figurine, a tinker-toy pen, and a few other things.
