The Gharlane of Eddore Memorial Cache.
Gharlane of Eddore was our friend, who died in
June of 2001.
He was a science fiction fan, especially of Lensman. He wrote
the web
resource about these books.
He worked as a computer technician at CSUS, and had a
big personna on Usenet.
Gharlane was proud of being an Eagle Scout, a member of the NRA,
a Wiccan, and he drove a 1966 Volkswagen he'd owned since he
graduated from high school. He was a secretive hoarder, giving
whole new meanings to the terms "pack rat" and "curmudgeon."
The cache is on the Sacramento Softball Complex grounds. If the
gate is closed, it is about a .6 mile walk, otherwise you can drive
almost to it.
I'm sorry the Senior Gleaners trucks no longer park here,
because not only did they shield the cache, but kids weren't
playing next to the fence as much and so didn't stumble over the
cache. We've moved the cache to a slightly more remote location.
It's now a large plastic candy jar. It still contains both good
things and total junk, retrieved from GoE's house as we cleaned it
and sold it. Anything science-fictional, or computer related, or
weird things, would be good to trade. Besides the logbook, pen, and
geocache note, it now contains:
- Sprig of rosemary for remembrance.
- The Literary Cat book, which has come back twice now.
- A partial chess set. There must have been over 20 minichess
sets in the house, and most of them were complete.
- 3D glasses which I gave him with a 3D video.
- Mending kit, first aid kit. Be Prepared.
- Earplugs.
- Eagle pin, Ghost in the Machine pin, Kilroy clip from the SF
Worldcon last September which Gharlane missed by dying.
- Alien, and Marvin the Martian.
- Pinky and the Brain toy
- foam computer.
- Hunk of quartz from Crystal Peak from one of our rockhounding
trips.
- A working ray gun!
- Lock. With patience, you can figure out the combination.
- Perpetual calendar (which ended in 1999)
- Hallowe'en pin and black cat charm for Gharlane's favorite
holiday.
- And, of course, ammo shells, a reloader, and a computer
circuit.
