Geocache Description:

This is a normal cache with a little twist, set on & around Beacon Hill, near Longhorsley, where I have visited on holiday for the past 10 years. Fantastic views are up for grabs day or night, aswell as an interesting piece of history that not too many know about.

A circular walk set in the tranquille countryside between the Cheviot Hills & the northumbrian coast line will take you past the site of an iron age village aswell as 'Claverings Cross' which although half fallen, still today, marks the point where a family feud turned bloody & the young brother of a local sheriff (Clavering) was shot & slain in 1586. This is an easy 5 parter & should take no more than an hour to complete. It is placed in dedication to all the people who I have met here over the years, thanks for some brilliant times guys. For anyone interested in Trigpointing, the trig 'TP1097' can be viewed from this cache. You will be following clearly marked footpaths & should use the map provided to guide you along the way. The coords at the top of this page will take you to the start of the trail & from here enter the other coords supplied below. Before you set off I would suggest bringing a pair of gloves with you as the final cache resting place is prickly & that you wear old shoes as it can get muddy. Now, if you are ready then we shall begin...

Location 1: N55°13.094 W001°45.932

Still insight of your starting location you should find yourself close to a post which has a number of footpath signs attached to it. Make a note of the amount of these signs. The answer =A

Location 2: N55°12.885 W001°46.494

Continue your walk until you reach a large wooden electricity pole. On the post are 2 metal plates, one of which is home to an 'NA' number. What is the first digit of this number? The answer =B

Location 3: N55°12.844 W001°47.174

After a short stroll through dense woodland you will come out by a winding road which you should follow to the right over the cattle grid. Views to the left are beautiful & a perfect oppertunity to take a few photos. Shortly you will reach an area known as 'Limestone kiln Flat' where limestone quarries & kilns once stood. A small house stands here and a fine is imposed for anyone who doesn't shut the gate! Find out how much that fine is and take the first digit. The answer =C

Location 4: N55°12.872 W001°47.260

Having reached the road after completing the footpath you will see a sign pointing back the way you have come. The distance to 'Harelaw' is printed on the wood. Add the first 2 digits. The answer =D

Now you have the answers exchange them for the letters in the following coords to find out where the cache is hidden...

NAA°1D.83D W001°C(B+1).318

Once the cache is located make sure to have a look at Claverings Cross which is through the gate close to the cache site. However, please note that it is situated in a farm field. We asked someone for permission to view the cross (which is now a broken standing stone) before we entered. You may wish to do the same as no footpath runs here. To complete the walk turn right from the cross gate & follow the road, turning right at the junction then right again when you reach the next. I hope you enjoy the views & history that Beacon Hill has to offer just as much as I always do. Happy caching, Dan...
