Devils Washboard Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Rattlingcrew: Greetings from GeoCaching.com

I have once again been looking at caches in the area which have been temporarily disabled for a while now. It appears that your cache has been under the weather for an extended period of time.

While I feel that GeoCaching.com should hold this location for you and block other cachers from entering the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time. I do not think we can do so any longer.

Therefore I have archived this cache. If you have not done so, please pick up any cache bits left behind as soon as possible.

When repairs to this cache are completed and it is time to have it reposted, it will be no problem. Just drop me a note and let me know the GC waypoint number of the cache. Better yet, the URL of the cache page. You will still be able to access your cache page just as before by going to your "My Cache Page" and clicking the link of your cache.

I will be more than happy to look at your cache again to see if it is within the guidelines of the GeoCaching.com website for placing of a cache.

Having caches posted as temporarily disabled for extended periods is particularly annoying for local cachers, as it still show up on their "to do" cache lists.

I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to the GeoCaching sport. I am looking forward to seeing your cache up and running in the near future.

Thanks for understanding our position,
Your friendly, but sometimes not real popular Kansas Admin.

Geocache Description:

Careful driving the washboard, when you read the long description you'll get the idea.

The cache is hidden in a camo painted 1/2 gallon water jug. It has various items to trade.

The area is along a rural road with several hilltops that are still fairly steep, but not like they used to be. The original story I heard about the area was there was a carload of high school kids killed in a rollover accident on the washboard sometime in the 50's or 60's. According to the legend the landowner was a parent of one of the kids who were killed and he placed the wrecked car on a hilltop as a reminder of the dangers of driving the road too fast. I can remember the old car standing on top of that rural hill southeast of Gypsum and just driving by there at night gave me the creeps cause I always thought of the story I had heard.

I was recently in the area and stopped to look at the changes that have occurred, the hills have been knocked down a bit and the car removed from it's hilltop stand and pushed over by a nearby tree down the slope from it's original perch. While I was stopped there an old farmer came along and gave me the correct version of the story. The kids were in an accident and one was permantly disabled in the accident, but not killed and as far as he knew he still lived in a nearby town. He said that the hilltop cropping was his doing as he has hauled feed down the old road for his cattle for years and decided it would be safer and smoother if the hilltops didn't have as much of a crest. As for the car, the landowner had kids about the same age as the injured boy and he thought it would be a good reminder for future generations of drivers.

The washboard doesn't seem quite as creepy now since I have the correct story!

The washboard does have a nice view of Gypsum Creek and the surrouding area.

You won't need to cross the fence to get the cache, have fun!
