Greatland Reviewer: Hello:

This cache page has been archived due to the lack of response to one or more prior Reviewer Note(s) about issue(s) with the cache and the Cache Owner has not been online since March. If the owner would like to have the cache unarchived, please contact me through my profile as soon as possible before another cache gets placed nearby.

Please note that unarchiving a cache page requires it to go through the same review process as a newly proposed cache, using the cache placement guidelines currently in effect.

Geocache Description:

A very popular hike that climbs a dry shady ridge to the top of the Ko'olau Range. The summit lookout has excellent views of the windward coast, especially the town of Waimanalo.

The name of this ridge means sounding knee. This reference is to the sound made by the Hawaiian knee drum, or puniu. The puniu is the top half of a coconut shell that was covered with the streched skin of the surgeonfish (known as kala) and tied to the right thigh just above the knee.

This trail has lots of interresting plant life: Christmas Berry Trees, Koa Haole, Guave, Laua'e Ferns, native Ulei Shrubs, Ironwoods, Norfolk Pines, Cook Pines, Ohi'a, and Lama just to name a few. Take time to enjoy the vegetation changes as you progress in elevation durng the hike.

The cache is an ammo can and is hidden in a very obvious spot. Please do not trample down the bush and make an obvious path to it. Two different GPS both had great positions when placing it so should be very easy to find.

This trail is extremely well maintained and is a gradual climb. The start (270' elevation) is a series of switchbacks without any serious grades and should be suitable for most familes. Although the elevation gain is significant the trail is very gentle. After the picnic benches (1100' elevation) it continues as a gentle grade but there are short areas with steeper grades (all with good roots or plastic steps to aid you). You arrive at the summit (2028' elevation) to a spectacular view. You still have to climb the 1800' elevation, but this is one of the most gentle trails you will find to do so.

Warnings/Suggestions:
-) THERE IS NO NEED TO GO NEAR AN EDGE!
-) This trail can be very slippery when wet. This trail is normally mud free, especially at the upper elevations but beware if not.
-) I would recommend hiking early in the morning before it gets to hot and planning for at least four hours unless you plan on jogging part of the way.
-) I would recommend taking at least 2-3 liters of waters unless it is a cool day.
-) Mountain Bikers can be seen on the first half of the trail.
-) There are picnic tables (and another cache) around the half way point so stop and have a snack either there or at the top.
-) The trail guide says this a 5 mile roundtrip, it appeared to be closer to 6 miles according to my GPS.

NOTE: As the cache owner is MIA, Honupohaku has graciously offered to hanai this cache for at least the time being. Thanks!
