Located within 1/2 mile of highway 191, in high country
south of Hannigans Meadow. Bushwack through woods and meadow
needed to reach cache.
This cache is the second in the Arizona "Top" series.
Green Top refers both to the greenery all around you at
over 9,000 feet, and also to Greenlee county's summit,
which is located very close to the cache.
The cache is not far from a busy highway, but in
a rather unvisited location, where navigation by
GPS is quite useful. Take care to find a safe parking place
by the road - a very faint and overgrown old dirt lane
is a good place to start on the east side of the highway.
Initial progress will be hampered by tall trees and
a barbed wire fence, but persistent cachers will soon
reach a big logged out meadow, were the going is much
easier. The cache is located in rocks at the meadow top.
You may spot the hikers cairn nearby, with a small glass
register. The actual geocache is in an ammo box.
It will be next to impossible to locate the cache in snow, which may be found from about Nov. 1 to May 1 (or later)
at this elevation. Best to visit this one in summer,
and skip it if a lightning storm is
active during your visit.
We recommend taking a waypoint at your car, and also
paying attention to landmarks on your walk in. Though the
distance is short, it is easy to get lost in country like this.
Though the cache is near the highest spot in many miles,
trees block distant views.
