A two-part micro cache hidden on the edge of the Alameda County Fairgrounds.
The listed coordinates are for the main entrance to the Alameda County Fairgrounds on Pleasanton Avenue in Pleasanton. Over three million people a year visit the fairgrounds for events which include trade and consumer shows, festivals, corporate picnics, the two-week county fair and much more.
This two stage cache requires you to gather some information in the fair main entrance area and then use it to determine the micro cache coordinates. It is not necessary to enter the fairgrounds to complete this cache.
The camouflaged micro cache, 1.5 inches long and 1 inch wide, contains the geocaching letter and the log sheet. Bring your own writing instrument.
I placed the cache to celebrate the June opening of the Alameda County Fair in a few weeks. The county fair, held in Pleasanton since 1912, is now a two week event with an extensive midway, displays, crafts, horse races, exhibits, professional and amateur entertainment and a variety of activities for the whole family. The horse races which draw many fans take place on a one mile racetrack originally developed by Augustine Bernal in the 1860s.
You will need to get this information from the main entrance area to determine the actual cache coordinates:
A. The year on the plaque commemorating the completion of the Fairgrounds Administration Building.
B. The last three digits of the phone numbers on the two pay phones located to the left of the main entrance gates.
C. The serial number on the FEBCO water valve in the wire cage between the Administration Building and the main entrance.
D. The number of the address of the Fairgrounds Administration Building.
E. The number of rose bushes which line the sidewalk leading to the Fairgrounds Administration Building.
To determine the North cache coordinate:
Add together three numbers: A, the difference between the two phone numbers in B, and 2. Now subtract the two numbers in B. Divide the result by 1000 to get a three digit decimal number. Add this number to the North coordinate to get the cache coordinate.
To determine the West cache coordinate:
Add together the digits in C and then divide D with that number. Disregard the remainder. Subtract E from the quotient. Divide the result by 1000 to get a three digit decimal number. Add this number to the W. coordinate to get the cache coordinate.
Now you are ready to find the micro cache which is not far away. If you are lucky you might see the race horses as they work out on the track or as they thunder toward the finish line urged on by a cheering crowd.
