Before UCSD became UCSD, it was Camp Matthews, a Marine Corps rifle
range. Ex-military buildings could once be spotted all over campus,
housing the police station, cashier's office and registrar, among
others. The small structure at the cache site, however, appears to
be the only thing preserved in its original state (down to the
recruits' graffiti!).
BRING YOUR OWN PEN! The cache is a waterproof silver match
container. It's smaller in diameter than a film canister. We've
hidden it in what seemed to us an intuitive spot; have a look
around and think about it before diving in. Please don't trample or
disturb the plants. This is not a needle-in-a-haystack cache,
despite its small size.
With proper technique, the cache can be retrieved using
equipment you brought along, or items you may find in the immediate
area.
Since the cache container can be difficult to
open, we'll give you instructions. Unscrew the middle section
(red in the diagram, even though the actual container is all
one color) as far as possible (about ten small turns). Once
there's space between the (green) lid and the (red) body of
the canister, you can pivot the (green) lid out of the
way.
