The first of a series highlighting old schools in Central
Oregon.
This old
schoolhouse was built in the early 1910’s, but school was
finally dismissed in the 30’s. It was used for various
meetings (church, literary guild, debate, etc.) until the late
1950’s. The last class was held in 1937, and the students were
then sent to the Culver school. The building burned to the
ground sometime in 1974 or 1975. Rumors say the fire was
started by either a transient or high school party-animals.
This was one of the last standing schools from the beginning
days of Crook and Jefferson counties. There are still several
in existence, but not recognizable as such. The purpose of
this series is to reintroduce these schools (or what is left
of them or where they stood) to a new generation of students
and cachers. We all can learn something, even if it is like
the quote from Winston Churchill, “the only thing man learns
from history is that he learns nothing from history.” Just
remember this is an historic site, and try not to disturb the
area. The hardest part of school was not being caught by the
teacher. Please be discreet. As this is a school cache and
rather small, please limit trade items to things found in
school.
