Bluegrass Reviewer: Greetings from Geocaching.com

It looks like your cache has been under the weather for some time. While
we feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for you and block
other cachers from entering the area around this cache for a reasonable
amount of time, we can't do so forever. Therefore we are archiving this
cache so that someone else can place a cache in the area and geocachers
can once again enjoy visiting this location. If you haven't done so
already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

If you are in the process of replacing or repairing your cache please
e-mail me in response to this archival, and I will unarchive your cache.

I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to
geocaching in the past and look forward to seeing your caches up and
running in the future.

Geocache Description:

Third in a series of history caches on small corporations that use to call Louisville home and have since been swallowed up by a larger company.

Mr. Henry Fischer, a German immigrant, started Fischer Packing Company in Louisville, Kentucky in 1904. Mr. Fischer left Germany in 1893, at the age of 17. He came to America and found difficult times financially, as the country was in a depression.

Mr. Fischer became acquainted with a meat peddler that asked him to go into business buying and selling meat on a partnership basis. He took what little money he had and purchased a used hand grinder and 400 pounds of pork trimmings and made a batch of fresh pork sausage that he sold door-to-door on the streets of Louisville, and this was the start of Fischer Packing Company.

Mr. Fischer’s son came into business with his father and it grew into an operation that slaughtered both beef and pork with a heavy emphasis on the manufacture of sausage, bacon, and hams.

In 1969, his son Carl Fischer, Jr. sold the company to Wilson Foods. International Fish & Meat purchased Fischer Packing Company from Wilson Foods, with a plan to build sales and volume of Fischer products into a significant regional producer.

Recently, Fischer Packing Company was purchased by SMG, Inc. SMG, Inc is located in Bloomfield, Ct. Today Fischer Packing Company is a strong, dominant regional brand. The companys old plant remains at 1860 Mellwood Ave. in Louisville. But like all the other brands in this series, all the production has moved out of town. There are plans to turn the old plant into a art gallery.

The company slogan for years was The Bacon Makin’ People, this has recently been changed to The Smiles Makin’ People to reflect the other products they make.

If you park at the weed, you can park as close as two feet from the cache.
