Geocache Description:

Church Wood

Church Wood is a semi natural woodland dating back to 1600. The land consists of 17 hectares of woodland and 2.4 hectares of grassland. The woodland consists mainly of Oak, Sweet Chestnut and Hornbeam and has been covered by a Protection order since 1950. Some trees are over 150 years old. The woodland is managed by traditional coppicing with areas being coppiced on an 8 to 30 year cycle, the coppiced wood being used for firewood, fencing, hop poles and charcoal.
The woodland is home to many birds such as Song Trushes, Blackbirds, Robins, and many other garden birds such as Chaffinches and Blue Tits. Early march will see visits from Chiffchaffs, Willow Warblers, Blackcaps and Firecrests.
At the right times of year you will see many flowers including Wood Anemones, Bluebells and Purple Orchids.
The wood is also home to Bats and many Butterflies including Brimstone, Commas, Small Tortoiseshells, Red admirals and Peacocks.
For further information go to : www.wildhastings.co.uk.
Drive past the church (Church in the Wood – My father in Law was Vicar of the church from 1967 to 1986 and I was married there in April 1986.) and park in the Car Park. Follow the trail (Proper stone covered paths)with the church graveyard on your right.
When the path splits go anti-clockwise,pass the area where the trees are being cleared.Keeping going ,the path will eventually turn sharp left.As you continue on the path rises slightly and you will pass a couple of small Oak trees.
As you approach a large Oak on the lefthand side of the path you will see a area of clay soil where a tree has fallen at sometime.
The cache is a green ammo box - only about 5 paces from the path - access easier from by the big Oak doubling back.
Follow the path round and it completes a loop back to where the path split.
