To get credit for visiting this cache, please post a photograph
with your log -- in particular, take a photo OF THE LAKE SHORE
while standing about halfway out on the walk to the structure,
showing both land and water in your picture. These photos will
provide a pictoral record over time of changes in conditions along
the lake shore during periods of high and low water. Face to the
west (right side when walking out onto the ramp) when taking the
photo. Thanks!
The "cache" is a large gray and blue structure that occurs at
the northern most shore of the largest lake in the southeastern
USA. However, despite its large size, you will not be able to see
the lake until you are very close to the cache. Many drive by the
lake and the splendid view that the cache provides without knowing
it even is there.
When you walk out onto the structure you will view a lake that
extends south as far as the eye can see. Today this huge lake (but
just 10 feet deep, on average)is encircled by a flood control dike,
yet it is a natural lake that formed nearly 4,000 years ago.
Despite pollution with nutrient runoff and managed water levels,
the lake supports a productive sport fishery and provides critical
habitat for wildlife in south Florida, including wading birds that
you might see from this location.
I hope you enjoy the view of the big lake from the virtual cache
structure, and gain some appreciation for the beauty and importance
of this large ecosystem.
