Not too far from ol' Ralph Dial's rock shop is this ECV monument celebrating an important piece of California's history. Wild times and great excitement happened right here in this sleepy little spot.
The "Bull and Bear market" were named after just part of the local entertainment, when Mexican Gold miners invited here by John C. Fremont, and goldseekers from all over the world gathered around a Bull and a Grizzly bear, chained together in a field. They would make bets on which one would survive the ensueing battle. Gold was found and lost and gambled away right in the tent camp and town that grew up here, and then passed into history.
Read the plaque and email me with the answers to the following questions:
1.) In 1850, California became a state; What significance did this particular place have in early California government?
2.) Who found this place? (Where were they from, what were they after?)
3.) How did it get its’ name?
4.) List the entertainment establishments in this town in 1851.
5.) What year did Mariposa become the seat of government?
I hope you enjoyed exploring around here. The Mexican miners were experienced Gold miners that came up from the Veta Madre, (Mother Lode) in Mexico, after they heard about the discovery of Gold in Alta California from seamen off the ships coming from San Francisco's wharf. It was a Mormon elder, Samuel Brannen wearing a coonskin cap that gave them Gold fever, brandishing a quinine bottle half full of Gold nuggets & flakes, he got as a tithe from the Mormon Battalion carpenters who built Sutter's Mill in the South fork of the American river. Ol' Sam was California's first entrepreneur millionaire, who started with someone else's money. Became the first millionaire to have a bad divorce, and die so broke, there was not enough left for a decent burial. Goes to show, ya cain't get away with cheatin God for long. (Names have been changed to keep the sport a sport.)
