Geocache Description:

Take a walk into the past.

Update 7-22-10 The questions have been changed to reflect some missing signs. All signs are embedded in Stone or Granite, so hopefully those don't go missing. Final cache location remains the same.

The above coordinates will get you to the parking lot of this picnic area. The complete coordinates can be determined from the puzzle below.

We have been driving by this picnic ground and historic site every time we go fishing, so we finally decided to check this place out. We have all read the history books about the Donner Party being stranded during the winter of 1846. If you haven't, this area will tell you the story. This is the place that the tale of cannibalism took place. So it feels weird to have a picnic site here.

Answer the following questions by reading the various plaques and signs on this short walking tour. You will then, use simple math and solve the final coordinates for the medium sized container. The cache is located far enough away as not to disturb the fragile history you are about to discover, but still within walking distance of the parking lot.

This site also is a very popular spot for day hikers and mountain bikers.
The grounds of this cache are about 3 miles north of the town of Truckee.

One digit per letter.
On the Donner Camp Site Plaque. At the bottom is a 3 (three) digit number (Above the date)? A B C

On the plaque near the parking lot called Donner Party at Alder Creek Valley, what is the 2 digit number after the year (third line)? D E

The plaque called Tamsen and Elizabeth Donner, what is the chapter number at the bottom? (4 digit number) F G H I

Now using simple math solve each of the equations to get the final coordinates.

U= H-D-A-I
V= G-E
W= F-I
X= B+C
Y= C+A
Z= G+F-D

39 22 .U V W 120 10 .X Y Z

The final location is now just a short walk away.
