Geocache Description:

This is a series of 4 caches placed along Sugarloaf Mountain's 2.5 mile Mountain Loop Trail.

Park at the entrance gate located at the foot of the mountain at N39 15.077 - W77 23.591 and walk the road between the two buildings. Trail maps are available as you reach the building on the left. Follow the paved trail heading left just after the buildings.

You will be following the white blazes clockwise up the mountain's west flank, around the north, then down the east flank returning to the parking area.

The coordinates given are for cache #1. Cache 1 contains the coordinates for cache #2. Cache #2 contains coordinates for cache #3.

Caches 1, 2 & 3 will contain partial coordinates for cache #4, the final cache. You will have to visit all three caches to get the location for the last cache.

If you prefer not to hike the entire trail at one time, cache #1 can be accessed from the Potomac Overlook parking area at the top of the mountain. Caches #2 & #3 can be accessed from the East View parking area at the top, and cache #4 from the entrance gate at the foot of the mountain.

Cache #4 is about 300 feet off the trail and will require some bushwacking.

Note: Most of the white trail is easy hiking, but there are several steep climbs, so it would be best to leave the little ones and your frail grandparents at home. Dogs are welcome if leashed.

Also note that this area is home to the timber rattlesnake and the copperhead. If you see a snake, don't provoke it. Watch where you put your hands and feet.

Look for black squirrels along the trail and pileated (red crested) woodpeckers around cache #1 and #3.

You may download a trail map from this site (visit link)
