Geocache Description:

A cache hidden around the 1880s station house in Osier Colorado.

The easiest and most pleasurable way to get to this geocache is to get a ticket on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic (C&TS) Railroad in either Chama New Mexico or Antonito Colorado. The C&TS is the longest and highest narrow gauge railroad in the world. This is a living museum. That means that if you want to follow the morning routine with the engineers to fuel and water the locomotives, come and bring your camera. You can even walk through the round house and talk to the mechanics. This isn’t one of those buy a ticket and keep out of our way railroads. If you leave from Chama, you will be pulled to the top of Cumbres Pass on a 7% grade. If there are enough passengers, you may have a second or third coal burning, fire breathing steam-powered locomotive pulling you up to the top of Windy Point. Let’s see that other railroad in Durango provide you with that power!

The cache is about a five-minute walk from where you will have lunch in Osier. So have lunch, take a walk, find this cache, enjoy the view and have plenty of time to catch your ride back.

Osier was built as a section house in the 1880s and was part of the Chili Line that went from Denver to Santa Fe. It is being returned back to original condition by the volunteer efforts of the “Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec Rail Road.

If you must go by car, get on HWY 17 that goes between Antonito and Chama. At waypoint, N37 03.251, W106 11.245 turn south. About ½ mile after the turn (N37 02.829, W106 11.259) turn right and travel an additional 14.5 miles to Osier. The dirt road is well maintained but, a little washboard at times. If the road is not dry, use caution. It can be slippery.

We left a lot of good stuff in the cache and the “Dolphins” travel-bug.

Have fun and enjoy the trip, view and beauty of the C&TS.
