A pleasant hike on the Noland Trail in the Mariners Museum.
The Mariners Tale - this is a virtual-multi cache
You may come aboard on the Noland Trail at the Mariners Museum or at any point, but our calm seas begin at a turnabout located at coordinates 37° 02.753N 076° 28.960W. Think your sextant can get you there? Lazy landlubbers may want to drive there using the entrance across from Warwick High School.
Proceed to 37° 02.685N 076° 29.018W which is the Oak Tree Overlook. What a view!
Now return to the Noland Trail, take a starbord turn, and make headway to the first bridge at 37° 02.657N 076° 28.832W. Check out the many water turtles which seem to frequent this area and the number of this bridge. Use this number to plot your course to your next port where you will find additional information:
37° 02.(# - 3)(# - 2)(# + 1)
076° 29.(# - 5)(# - 7) (# - 5))
When you heave to, you should find a patent date. Use it in this fashion to plot your next course:
ABCD = the year.
37° 02.(A + 4)(B - 6)(C + 7)
076° 29.(D - 2)(A + 8)(D + D)
Ahh, smooth sailing for you - but it was not for the crew of this patriotic ship. Using numerals, record the month/year of their capture in the following fashion:
E/FGHI = month/year
Now come about and plot your course to your last port-o-call:
37° 02.(E + 1)(F + 1)(H + 1)
076° 29.(I + 1)(G)(D)
To log this cache, email VirginiaSeeker with the title given to the individual memorialized here. The original memorial to Matthew Fantaine Maury, "Pathfinder of the Seas, near the iron fence along the lake was removed. You may score the cache by identifying the person memorialized on the monument on the hill nearby.
Look around - the view is great in all directions. Take time to explore the Mariners Museum. Now an adult, I have come to appreciate this area to which I could walk and play as a child. I chuckle about our sledding on the hill and thinking it was SO BIG.... I now live in the mountains. HA! My Mom, age 78 at the time, walked this trail and helped me select the hints for this cache.
