The coordinates will lead you to a "Time Capsule" near the Marietta, Oklahoma town courthouse. It has a surface engraved stone marker to mark the spot. The marker says “Marietta Centennial Time Capsule”.
It doesn’t tell you who put it there or why, and none of these facts are in any books. Many of the locals do not know of its existence, and/or any of the history surrounding it. The history has until now been passed by word of mouth, so we considered a virtual cache as a good forum for it to reach a larger audience.
Maybe a young Geocacher today will remember to be there when they open it in the distant future. That is our hope, anyway.
The Marietta town courthouse was the first courthouse built in Oklahoma after Oklahoma became a state. The time capsule was buried to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the courthouse. The Marietta Gunfighters, who placed the capsule, are an Old West reenactment club that was established in 1965. Also in 1965 the FRONTIER STAGE was built on the courtyard for the first Marietta Frontier Days, which is an annual town celebration in the month of June, which takes place on the grounds of the courthouse. The Marietta Gunfighters, who continue this legacy today, originally organized the celebration.
The time capsule was placed many years later, during a Frontier Days celebration. The celebration changed organizers over the years between the town of Marietta, Love County, and others. This year, the responsibility was given back to the Marietta Gunfighters. The owners of this cache, marietta fastdraw, snowstar and dallastexan, are members of the Marietta Gunfighters.
We came up with the idea for this cache during this year’s Frontier Days. According to one of the original members of the Marietta Gunfighters, who was a young teenager when he helped start the group, the time capsule contains a lot of sentimental memorabilia pertaining to the original Marietta Gunfighters who have since passed on, the courthouse, and the history of the town.
