Geocache Description:

The cache was hidden in an ammo box, replaced 3 times with a ammo box, but as of 12-June 2022 it's replacment is a Lock and Lock box inside a cammo bag. Cache is located on top of a Sandstone outcrop overlooking the village of Nesscliffe, on the old A5, Thomas Telford’s road, which ran from London to Holyhead. A cave in the cliff face below the outcrop is reputed to have been the home / hideout of a local outlaw by the name of Humphrey Kynaston, the cave is well worth a visit, the easier way is if you follow the path anti-clockwise from the suggested car park, if you go clockwise from the suggested car park you’ll get to the cache first, but the steps down from the top of the hill by the top of the quarry going down towards the cave can appear a bit precarious. The cave is at N52 46.076 W2 54.851 - on the day that I hid the cache the signpost that points up the track to the cave looks like it had been broken off. Some of the legends surrounding Humphrey Kynaston include his stabling his horse in one side of the cave and him living in the other, closing the entrance to the cave with an iron door – which legend says later became the door to Shrewsbury Jail. If you drive along the A5 from Shrewsbury towards Nesscliffe, just past the picnic site, look to your right as you go over the River Severn, the old bridge is on the old A5 where a further legend says that to try and catch Kynaston some planks were removed from the old wooden bridge, however his horse, known to the locals as Beelzebub made a tremendous leap across what was left of the bridge and carried his master to safety. The car park end (the one to the west) of the hill is covered with well hidden ramparts of an old Iron Age hill fort, some Roman finds have been made in this location as well. More information is provided on some of the information boards around the marked walks.
