Geocache Description:

This is one that can be done in combo with "Doink", "Fenced In", “Us and Them”, and "Treading Through the Park.”

The container is a large plastic jar. It has a few things in it to trade. Enjoy the trek through these woods. Some Information About Heath Park :Heath Park, formerly known as Conifer Park, is bounded on the north by Conifer Drive, on the south by the backyards of houses on Richfield Avenue, on the east by Rt. 81, and on the west by South Salina Street. Cold Brook, a protected trout stream, flows south to north through the Park. Approach the stream quietly and you may spot a good sized trout near one of the bridges! What is now Heath Park was a part of the property purchased by the State of NY in 1912 to serve as an experimental field station for the College of Forestry. From 1912 to 1962 the College used the area for the demonstration of various agricultural practices and the effects of diverse spacing, pruning, and thinning on the natural and transplanted tree species. Transplanted species consisted primarily of conifers, hence the original name of the Park and the bordering street. In 1962 the construction of Rt. 81 separated the western portion of the College property from that portion east of Rt. 81. The eastern portion is still owned and used by the College. The western portion was deeded to the City of Syracuse for $1 with the provision that no road be constructed from South Salina Street to Rt. 81. The Park was renamed Heath Park in memory of the Syracuse Commissioner of Parks and Recreation, James Heath, who lived in the area and was killed in a plane crash in 1969.There is an historical plaque located just off South Salina Street that provides some interesting information about the Park area.Parking/Access:The north boundary of the Park is Conifer Drive. This is the best place to park. If you park close to South Salina Street, walk south to the historical plaque, then follow the old access road into the Park and on up the hill. If you park further east on Conifer Drive, there is a path along Cold Brook that will take you to the old access road. There is a a shorter, more direct route to this cache by parking in the lot behind Green Hills grocery store and the Planet Fitness but you'll miss a really nice hike up through Heath Park.
