Along the Texas Independence Trail you can find a monument marking the birthplace of Texas Freedom.
During the colonial period of 1825 to 1835 there were many problems with the Comanche and Tonkawa Indians. In 1831, the Mexican government sent Gonzales a six-pound cannon as protection against the Indians. As the "Texans" got more defiant of the Mexican government, the Mexicans decided that they wanted their cannon back.
The little cannon was used in the 'Come and Take It' Battle on October 2, 1835, firing the first shot in the Texas Revolution. This monument is dedicated to the 18 men who defied the mexican troops. The actual battleground site is 1 mile from here. To visit the actual site take Spur 95 one mile north to the Guadalupe River.
To get credit for this cache email me with the answer to the following question. What year did the state place the monument? Once you know this, you will find it amazing that the state paid $10,000 to place this monument. As always please do not leave any hints when logging your visit on the cache page.
