Geocache Description:

Historic village area showcasing colonial era buildings and house restorations from 17 and 1800's

This old area and collection of buildings and museums are a popular tourist destination to learn about local history, colonial life and hazards.

Deerfield, Massachusetts, an 8000-acre land grant to the Proprietors of Dedham, was first settled by the English in 1669. The fertile valley between two rivers was prime agricultural land and the mile-long plateau an ideal location for the nucleated village which, although changed over time, can still be viewed today. Forty-six buildings erected before 1850 survive along the main street and both the size and the scale of the village have been preserved. Prior to English arrival, the area was home to the Pocumtuck Indians. Deerfield was known to natives as Pemawachuatuck "at the twisted mountain".

Take I-91 to Exit 24 (northbound); or Exit 25 (southbound). Then go 6 miles north on Routes 5 & 10.

Find the historic sign/plaque on the main street ** at the coordinates **. To show you have been there email me the name on the plaque directly to the left of the marker sign (who's house used to be there). The sign talks of the Deerfield raid and the captives. Check out the many old timber buildings and shops, etc. You do -not- have to pay to just look around.

Happy Geocaching!

Historic Deerfield Information from www.historic-deerfield.org:

Historic Deerfield
In 1936 Mr. and Mrs. Henry Flynt of Greenwich, Connecticut enrolled their son at Deerfield Academy, a nationally known college preparatory school founded in 1797 and located in the center of the village of Deerfield. The Flynts were amazed at the remarkable but fragile state of preservation of the old village, surrounded, as it is today, by nearly 1000 acres of rich farmland. With encouragement from Deerfield Academy's Headmaster Frank Boyden, they began to purchase the old houses as they came up for sale and to carefully restore them. The Flynts' interest in American history and in collecting American decorative arts led them to open several houses to the public as museums displaying their collections.

Historic Deerfield was incorporated in 1952 to formalize the work of Mr. and Mrs. Flynt and to carry on the long tradition of architectural, agricultural and artifactual preservation that is Deerfield's legacy.

Today 14 museum houses and the Flynt Center of Early New England Life display more than 25,000 objects made or used in America between 1650 and 1850. It is the quality of this collection, the meticulously preserved 18th and 19th century houses in which it is displayed, and the old village itself that make Deerfield the New England we all hope to find.
