You will need to paddle to find this one!
We start at 43° 26.002N 71° 10.221W. The cache is just over a mile of winding river from here. Take the left fork at 43° 25.674N 71° 10.684W to find the cache. There is much more marsh past the cache to explore but it is a dead end. Return to the fork and go left to the big lake or right to go back to the start.
New Hampshire magazine rated Merrymeeting Marsh as one of the top ten paddles in the state. The water flows gently towards Lake Winnipesaukee, passing under route 28 (at 3.25mi) by the Alton traffic circle and under route 140 (at 4.5mi) by the Alton fire station and over a dam. Kayaks will fit under the Rt.140 bridge, canoes have to portage over the road. Both portage at the dam. Easy out, short walk, and easy in. If you want more of a trip bring two cars and leave one at 43° 28.360N 71° 14.204W by the boat ramp in Alton Bay. Total trip time to the big lake is 3.5hrs of easy paddling 6.5+ miles.
