Great Stories of Science Fiction Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Brainerd: On a whim, I reintroduced myself to the branch manager, and he had the book. It's a small library, and the cache is not entirely welcome there. Bottom line..I have the book back! Maybe "Great Stories of Science Fiction" will find a new home in the future. Thanks for all of the visits and the very kind logs. It's a wonderful library, and I would encourage anyone in the area to pay it a visit.

Geocache Description:

This is a library cache, with a bit of a twist. The cache box
is not an Altoids tin! I think you'll enjoy the discovery.

Do Not Ask the Librarians for Help!
You're on your own on this one.

It's fairly straightforward. The coordinates will lead you to the newly-renovated Amelia Earhart Public Library. It's a nice old structure that resembles a brick ranch home - complete with fireplaces. Ms. Earhart's statue out front is being recast in bronze, and it should be in late October.

Now ... here's your big clue:

LIBRARY HISTORY:
  • The library was originally located on Sepulveda Blvd, and was run by the town of Lankershim until it was annexed by the City of Los Angeles in 1924. It was know as the "Sepulveda Library" (note: "SL").
  • In 1929 the library moved the branch, and built a new structure at it's current location on Tujunga. Because they wanted the initials of the library to remain "SL", they searched for a historic figure with those initials. The Southern poet, Sidney Lanier, fit the bill. His name is still carved on the facade of the building and excerpts from his poetry grace the historic fireplace and the new plaza garden bed.
  • In 1948, the Board of Library Commissioners decreed that Sidney Lanier's name remain on the building, but that the library should be referred to as the North Hollywood Branch.
  • During the 1950's, windows in the library were covered and much of the woodwork was removed.
  • In 1981, the library was renamed the "North Hollywood Amelia M. Earhart Regional Branch". The Kansas born Ms. Earhart was a resident of neighboring Toluca Lake.
  • Ms. Earhart is believed to have died somewhere in the Pacific at the age of 39. Interestingly enough, the original namesake of the library, Mr. Lanier, also died at the age of 39.
  • The 1994 Northridge earthquake caused severe structural damage and temporarily closed the branch, but it was soon reopened after some significant and some cosmetic repairs.
  • In 2001, the library closed for a 15 month renovation. It was reopened on November 2, 2002.
  • The renovation was extensive and included the addition of 1,400 square feet. The interior spaces were reconfigured and architectural elements were restored to their original state.
  • The following quote can be found on the tile mantle inside the library. "I am but a small winged bird but I would conquer the world." Was that said by Ms. Earhart, you say? Wrong. It belongs to Sidney Lanier!
