Geocache Description:

Nice walk in open countryside to site of a 12th Century Castle - nothing much left except a system of moats (some still holding water) and heavily over-grown mounds.

more info)

Handy in times of insurrection - or when the nettles are high...

Half a mile from easy parking just off Ermine St. at the start of the bridal path which can be muddy. It's mildly uphill for the first half then down for the second

Cache is a small plastic lunch-box just at the side of the bridal path. Good satellite signal right up to the site - no tree cover on your route!

Original contents: Table Mountain key ring, LED torch keyring, set of crayons, 35mm film cassette.

If you want to see the historical bit, walk 30 or 40 metres past the cache - you'll clearly see one of the moats and the edge of an earth mound just to the left of the bridal path (behind a fence). Not much information about the site, other than the fact that a 12th century wooden castle once stood here in the time of King Stephen and the period called 'The Anarchy'. There are two enclosures surrounded by moats, and the castle might not have been used for very long. The council may have plans to clear the site of scrub in the future which would make a lot more of it visible

Please remember to keep to the bridal path! (don't make the mistake of trying to take a 'shortcut'!)
