Geocache Description:

Your cache adventure will take place at Philpott Dam and Lake located in Patrick, Henry and Franklin Counties and continue along the Smith River. The hunt consists of two phases all within a half mile (as the crow flies)in Henry County.

As any seasoned cache hunter will tell you, you must never OVERLOOK the obvious. And to start your search, you should begin near the Philpott Lake Visitor Assistance Center ~ home of Ranger TracksAll. Your first cache is only the coordinates for the main cache. You might as well use the "SEAT" and enjoy the view, because once you find coords for stage two, depending on the day, time, and state of the nation, you will either have to #1) hike the trail beginning back by the wooden rail fence at the sidewalk or #2 drive down to the dam spillway if you are short on time and energy. Once you have found the main cache coordinates...here are some tips to get you started on phase two. #1) The hiking trail is steep and difficulty level might be rated closer to 3.5 - only because of having to hike back up when you are done. But distance is short and school children do it on a regular basis. There are many surprises along the way that can only be seen by taking the trail. (ie: Only hikers get to stand at the top of the dam - which is awesome!) #2) If you are lucky and the gate on Dam Spillway Road (SR 905) is open to the dam powerhouse, you may drive to the base of the dam where you will pick up on the last 1/3 of the hike to the cache along the Smith River Trail. Don't bushwhack it...Park at the beginning of the handrail near the red warning sign. (Look for a trail guide on the back side of the bulletin board. Please leave it for the next person when you are done.)If gate is closed, you may park where the white building is and walk down the road. It's paved, but what goes down must come up - and it is a long way down. So... if the gate is closed, the difficulty rating just went up to a 3. NOTE: When gates are closed...parks ARE open to pedestrian traffic until sunset. In light of Huggy-D1 and The Blind Acorn's misadventure... The main gates are closed daily at 4:30 from Oct 1 - Mar 31. From Apr 1 - Sept 31 the main gates are opened until 8:00 pm.

Follow deer trail off to right at trail end about 75 yards then bushwhack back towards river. Cache box is a small orange box about 3 1/2 by 2 1/2 by 2 inches deep. Bring small item to trade. I sure hope you enjoy your visit to the US Army Corps of Engineers - Philpott Project. USACE Park Ranger "TracksAll"
