Not many people today know about Grant’s Canal. Several attempts were made by Grant to bypass Vicksburg by digging a canal 1 ½ miles long, 60 feet wide and 6 feet deep. The Confederates placed several big guns on the opposite shore and bombarded the work on the canal, this disrupted the work and the Union even lost the site. Once they regained control they pressed into service 1200 blacks from the area to help dig Grant's canal. On March 7 1863 the upper dam gave way and the entire peninsula was flooded. “Grant’s Canal” had failed. Milliken's Bend was once a thriving area with plantation homes. Now, it's just a memory as open fields replaced the homes after Grant burned them. Milliken's Bend was located on Thomastown Road and was the area's center of wealth prior to the Civil War. There is still an open dogtrot house on the road. Grant used this residence as a prison.

In order to get credit for this you must e-mail me the answer to the question below. Please do not post the answers in the log even if it is encrypted. At the site you will find a sign that says “ US African Brigade” at the bottom of the sign you will find the casualty count on Millikens bend. Email the following: 1. Total Count of Killed, Wounded and Missing added together? Since I have had a number of arm chair cachers a picture of you at the entrance sign is now required in addition to the answer. It can be emailed or posted with your log as long as it isnt the sign with the answers on it. Logs or pictures with the answer will be DELETED

Quick note on this name. The cache was named this because someone back in the early days of caching had a cache called Pemberton's Debacle. This was placed to show that the South was not the only ones to have a debacle.
