One, if by land....two, if by sea.
Like the British at Boston, you can get to this cache two ways, but both will probably require getting wet, making this cache a "5" for difficulty. The cache is contained within an OD ammo can marked "Geocaching.com." It's stocked with a "Welcome note," a notebook and pencils, and some commemorative lapel pins and patches . It is not necessary to leave any trinkets at this site.
"One, if by land" - Go to N42'33.027', W082'51.224'. Then go to N42'32.918', W082'51.094' and enter the "sea" on foot. An old pair of running shoes or beach shoes are necessary. A personal floatation device (life jacket) should be worn although the water will never be over your head (unless you're under 5' tall). Use of a sturdy walking stick or staff is strongly advised. Now...some riparian law: So long as your feet stay in the water, you will have violated no private property rights. Step up on the sand or rocks....and you'll be on the other side of the law. Back to the hunt: Follow the shoreline, cross the channel and go to N42'32.996', W082'50.998' for the cache on privately-maintained public property.
"Two, if by sea" - Go to N42'33.027, W082'51.020. Then go to N42'32.726', W082'50.967. Finally, get as close to N42'32.996', W082'50.998' as practical and prudent. Disembark and look for the cache on privately-maintained public property. Special note: Watch your depth!!! You can anchor out for almost a mile and wade to the cache, if you prefer. Wear a personal flotation device (life jacket) and protective footwear. Use of a sturdy walking stick or staff is strongly advised.
Special note on launching: There is a public access ramp approximately 1/2 mile north of the cache.
Special note for everyone: Be sure to follow Geocaching etiquette. Do not intrude on private property. It's not necessary and may get you yelled at (minimum) and/or arrested (maximum). Otherwise, have no concern about being observed for you will be highly visible and obvious, unless you sneak in under cover of darkness with SCUBA gear (Not advised!!). When you successfully locate this cache you may be rewarded with a friendly "Hello," a one-gun salute from a down-sized, but historically accurate 12-pounder Napolean replica cannon, or a few toots from an electronic megaphone...if the cacher or neighbors are able to respond in time.
Extra seasonal note for everyone: Because of nesting birds and/or hazzardous ice conditions, THIS CACHE IS OPEN ONLY FROM JUNE 1ST THROUGH OCTOBER 31ST. The cache will be removed at all other times. We are neither equipped, nor trained for water/ice rescues. Also, the nesting Canada Geese and swans can be very territorial and nasty certain times of the year.
Special Boater's Advance Notice: Later this year (2005) it's my intention to place a new underwater cache in a different location. This will not replace the "One...If By Land" cache, but will be in addition to it. It'll be named "Yellow Submarine." It will only be accessible by boat. Keep your eyes peeled...mateys!
