Rookwood Readers

WOW! I have never answered so many responses since starting this cache with Murex! It so cool that many of you enjoy the Readers and other ceramics as much as we do. Please be mindful that any log posted by a catcher sending an incorrect answer will be deleted. There is a plaque with a date, but we want the cornerstone date. This virtual cache is an awesome example of Cincinnati's Rookwood Pottery used as an architectural feature. Because of the site's architectural and historical significance, it is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.

Rookwood Pottery was founded in Cincinnati in 1880 by Marie Longworth Nichols as a place where women could enjoy their hobby of decorating pottery. Not very long after opening, Rookwood Pottery became "one of America's first major industries to be owned and operated by a woman." Because of its artistry and quality standards, Rookwood Pottery quickly achieved worldwide fame and has become extremely valued by collectors. Rookwood Pottery was a successful business until 1934 when it was closed and the molds were sold.

In the early 1900s, Rookwood's unique glazes and styles reflected the art and crafts movement then. Decorative tiles were the most commonly used architectural feature, but other architectural components were also manufactured. Many buildings constructed in Cincinnati during this time period still have their Rookwood architectural components intact. Take the time to walk around this building to find all of the interesting architectural details. It is simply a work of art!

**Caution. We recommend visiting this cache during the daylight hours due to its location within a marginal neighborhood. It also helps to see the building during daylight hours. It is simply magnificent!**

Before posting your log, verify your visit by emailing the answer to the question below to the placers (Click on [PROFILE] above to access email). Logs without e-mail confirmation of the correct answer will be deleted.

QUESTION: What year was the building constructed? (hint: Year is shown on the cornerstone).

NOTE: Thanks to all who have visited our cache and enjoyed the beauty! If you want to see another interesting building drive northward on State to Cummins (or you could stay on Beekman if you would like but Cummins is easier) then back onto Beekman and stop when you get to Elmore. There is another building at this intersection with Rookwood accents. Look for the Pelican.
