Third in a series of defensive positions in eastern North Carolina used during the War Between the States
In the spring of 1861 North Carolina troops were ordered to occupy Federal installations within the state - This long abandoned defensive position was among those - It has an important place in NC history and as such is included in the State Park system - Enjoy the surroundings - Bring a picnic and a fishing pole - The museum is quite informative so be sure to spend some time exploring the facility - The citadel of the facility closes at 5 pm so be sure to get here early
One thing that makes this a special place to me is that my Great-great grandfather was stationed here as part of Company B of the 10th North Carolina State Troops (1st North Carolina Artillery) - Prove you were here - Standing at the cache coordinate position which is in the citadel look toward an American flag in the distance - On the outer parapet you will see one of the batteries occupied by Grandpap's company - How many gun emplacements are to be found there? - Email the answer
