Geocache Description:

Abandoned Coastal Artillery position, adjunct to the Sabine Pass Military Reservation.

(Difficulty and terrain rating changed due to the poor shape of the road leading to the cache) Sabine Pass Military Reservation (Texas Point National Wildlife Refuge) (1898? - 1945), Sabine Pass Located on Texas Point were three unnamed coastal defense batteries from 1898-1899 (one 8-inch, two 5-inch, and two 7-inch guns) destroyed or buried, a 1917-1918 two-gun 5-inch gun battery, and a two-gun 155mm GPF battery on panama mounts from 1942-1944, which replaced a temporary field-positioned 105mm howitzer battery. Four concrete magazines still exist. Eight 37mm AA guns were located at Port Arthur (1942 - 1944), four at the Gulf Oil Company, and four at the Texas Oil Company. (some info provided by Bill Gaines of the CDSG)

This site is where the U. S. Army constructed a series of Coastal Artillery positions from 1898 thru 1944. After WWII the advent of the atomic bomb and missles made coastal artillery obsolete overnight. Many battery positions were simply destroyed or sold to civilians.

This gunmount is only one of several that were built after the end of the civil war, begining in the period of time roughly of when the Spanish American War was fought. They were rebuilt and upgraded several times ending with what is called a "Panama Mount". This type of mount allowed for the gun (a two-gun 155mm GPF battery) to be swung in a 360 degree arc. Once you see the gun mount you'll see what I'm talking about. The bunkers in the Sabine Pass Battlefield Park were the ammo bunkers for these guns. The other gun positions have been lost to history (or they are just out there in the adjoining marsh somewhere).

To log the find, please go to the southernmost end of Jetty Road south of Sabine, Texas. You'll find you must turn around at that point, right where the Sabine Pass Pilot Boats are stationed. In the middle of the traffic circle you will find what you are looking for. Please post a picture of yourself either standing in front of the gun mount, or even on it, as there is no restriction from doing so. Please be careful when climbing on it if you feel you must do so. It was built for military purposes, not tourists...lol. There was a small memorial plaque in the middle of the gun emplacement, but it has been stolen and has not been replaced.

There are two more of this type of gun emplacement near one of my other caches, Bryan Beach 4X4, near Freeport, Texas. One has an 8 inch howitzer on it but that is not the gun that was orginally on it. It does, however, have the correct type of gun carriage under it (minus the wheels and tires) that was used on these types of mounts. There is now a "micro-cache" there, "Ready, Aim, Fire!", and it is waypoint GC1FWKP. If you go there the west Panama Mount is readily accessible with a graded and paved path, the second one, to the east of the first, is not, you have to bushwhack...lol.
