The Monte Cache is reached by traveling east along Route 66 from Albuquerque and turning off into the Monticello Subdivision. You will end up parking at an Open Space parking area that requires no fee. Enjoy the nice hike on a gradual incline into a small valley.
A good short hike for those that enjoy the easier hiking. This cache gets you high enough to look back south toward I-40 and across into the Cibola National Forest. The trails are good, many to choose from with the last bit of the hike off-trail.
The first part of the journey by car will test your skills. The Open Space parking is easy to find, but you may make a few wrong turns in the Subdivision, however, the drive is worth making.
During the summer keep your eyes open for the biting critters and slithering ground dwellers.
