Geocache Description:

Mt. Alyeska in Girdwood, Alaska. Part of Alyeska Resort as well as the Chugach National Forest. Terrain is mountainous, rocky, and slick when wet. Altitude is around 2,686. Leave time for unique alpine mountain exploring in addition to finding the cache. PLEASE NOTE: This cache will be available annually from about mid-May through mid-September and may move from year to year.

Cache is a gray plastic Pelican case hidden in a fairly visible spot once you're close, but hard to reach if you attempt to reach it in straight lines.

You can hike up from the parking lot at the Alyeska Daylodge for free (an hour or more just to get to the upper Tram station), or you can park at the hotel and take the Tram up to 2,300 feet (under $20 per person, Alaska residents get a small discount). Wear durable and grippy shoes or boots for handling the rocky terrain. From the Tram station, the hike can take anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour to the cache, depending on your fitness level and chosen path, but be sure to enjoy scrambling across the mountain while you're here.

About Alyeska glacier... There is a "hanging" or "alpine" glacier on the mountain. You can reach it quite easily once you're up the mountain this high. But be careful -- if you don't know what you're doing, glacier travel can be dangerous. Organized trips ($) are available through "Ascending Path," a Girdwood tour company (no affiliation).

Original cache contents are a real mix, including bubbles, homemade postcards, an LED flashlight, Iditarod patch and pin, a DVD from the nearby "Runaway Train" cache, a ring from Greece, a scarab beetle from Egypt, and more.

This is a summer-only cache, and will be removed around mid-September. Finally, if you're not a regular on Mt. Alyeska during the summer, be sure to bring a camera.
