Geocache Description:

Located in Historic Glenwood Cemetary. Open from Dawn til Dusk. Park to the right of the fountain.

Located in the middle of the Glenwood Cemetery is a grave surrounded by chain links known as, "The Witch's Grave". The legend of the Witch of Yazoo became famous in Willie Morris' book, Good Old Boy published in 1971. This story is an example of the unusual folklore surrounding Yazoo County. Others however, have pointed out that the grave was there long before Morris was born and that the chain had been broken for a long time.

In the autumn of 1884, a boy named Joe Bob Duggett found 2 dead men in the house of the witch. He rushed to tell the sheriff who in turn raced to the house. They chased the witch into the woods where she was caught in quicksand. As she sank she screamed "I shall return. Everybody always hated me here. I will break out of my grave and burn down the whole town on the morning of May 25, 1904!" The body was retrieved and she was buried in the center of the Glenwood Cemetary. She was chained into her grave with 30 strong links.

The Fire of May 25th, 1904 destroyed over 200 residences and nearly every business was ruined. Half of the population of Yazoo City was directly affected by the fire. Many theories evolved as to how the fire started but none were conclusive. After the flames died down, several of the town elders visited the cemetary to find the chains around the grave broken. The witch became the scapegoat.
