Geocache Description:

An overlook above Phelps Lake that makes for a great half-day hike and an even greater picnic spot.

LOGGING REQUIREMENTS (new for 2018)

• There is a small sign here that says to use the trail for lake access. Take a picture of yourself and GPS next to this sign with the lake in the background.

To get to the hilltop, you can start at the Death Canyon Trailhead. Coords for the parking area are N 43º 39.317 W 110º 46.816. The walk is moderate with some elevation gain and is just over a mile each way. A car can make it to the trailhead but the road is rough- I would give the gravel road to the parking a higher terrain rating than the actual trail! Depending on the condition of the road, you might want to think twice about driving to the trailhead in your rental car.

There are two small metal signs here. One of them lists your elevation: 7200 feet. Even so, form this point you're only at the base of the Tetons. After visiting this spot, you can turn back the way you came, go down to the lake, or, if feeling more adventurous, proceed down the hill and up into Death Canyon. Be sure to carry plenty of water and check weather and snow levels before heading into the canyon, since the trail is steep and rocky and snow and ice can stick around into Summer.
