This is probably our most favorite place in all of La Jolla, yet few people know about this area. It offers a beautiful view of the La Jolla “Bay” and there is a nice secluded eucalyptus grove as well as a network of fun nature trails nearby.
***To prevent fellow cachers from being ticketed by the UCSD police (since this is UCSD property and you are NOT permitted to park on the side of the road closest to the cache!) we will describe 3 different approaches, which are listed below in order of increasing physical demand and time commitment:
---“The Guerilla Cacher:” park in the tempting dirt driveway you encounter close to the cache, but you better get out of there before the UCSD police cruise by and catch you illegally parked. Watch for speeding cars when backing out!!! This approach IS handicapped accessible and may serve as an excellent drop off point for a wheel chair.
---“The Lunch Break Cacher:” park to the north of the cache on La Jolla Shores Drive. Should take only 10-15 min.
---“THE EXPLORER:” park on Torrey Pines road or one of the surrounding residential streets. At the three-way intersection of La Jolla Village Drive, Torrey Pines Road and North Torrey Pines Road follow the trail that runs diagonally across the empty field and enters the brush by a sign. This approach will take you along some very scenic canyon-side trails that would be great for biking as well. Meandering along the hillside trail may prove to be more visually rewarding then diving through the brush directly towards the cache, and will still get you to your goal. A few spots on the trail are just slightly overgrown so bring pants. Also this approach carries a difficulty rating of 2 and a terrain rating of 2, so watch for rattlers and ticks. ***Team Gingka highly suggests this approach***
The cache is a 0.5 gallon see-through container. Watch for sharp cholla cacti along the way. We suggest you bring an old blanket and lunch to have a picnic with a view in the nearby eucalyptus grove. For more adventure proceed north from the cache site until you hit a well worn trail heading east and poke around the nearby bushes to find an odd fenced-in remnant of an old SIO building. Enjoy!
