Greatland Reviewer: Hello island paddler:

Geocache Description:

Onomea Bay - "The Best Place"

This cache is hidden near beautiful Onomea Bay on the Big Island. This is also a theme-based cache so be sure to read the whole description before searching.

Onomea (which is Hawaiian for "the best place") Bay can be reached via the 4 mile scenic drive along the Hamakua Coast. If heading to the bay from Hilo-side of the scenic drive, you will notice a lookout to the bay with limited parking along the side of the road prior to reaching Hawaii Tropical Botantical Garden. The view from here is spectacular, but better views await along the trail to those willing to hike down to the bay. Near the lookout you will notice a somewhat steep, old road that heads down towards the bay. The road is off limits to vehicles, but is the public access trail to the shoreline. This is where you start your trek to the cache. Be very careful as you walk down since the trail/road can be very slippery. Towards the bottom of the old road, you'll notice it appears to end with Hawaii Tropical Botantical Garden employees blocking your way. Look to your right and you'll see the continuation of the Na Ala Hele public access trail to the bay. When you get to the bay, be sure to notice the fallen sea arch on your left as you look out to the ocean. Legend has it that King Kamehameha threw his spear to create the sea arch; but in 1956, an earthquake caused it to collapse.

The theme of this cache is reflected in its contents - postcards! "Wish you were here" is a phrase many of us think when we visit a beautiful place, and it is often found on postcards that picture such places. So when you visit this cache, please bring a postcard of your home state/country to place in the cache, and feel free to take a postcard showing a picture of someplace else. Placing a stamp on the postcard you leave is much appreciated by other geocachers, but not required. Remember to watch your step as you walk around searching for the cache. Also, please be sure to leave the cache EXACTLY as you found it to prevent it from being looted and the contents getting wet. Another note: lock your car before you hike down to the bay (for obvious reasons). Mahalo and happy geocaching!

Initial contents of cache:
10 postcards (most w/ Hawai`i themes and a stamp)
