Geocache Description:

A walk over rough terrain to an outstanding viewpoint.

Nine Standards Rigg stands at the point where the Coast-to-Coast Walk crosses the Pennine watershed. There are extensive views in all directions, taking in the Lake District, Cross Fell, Swaledale, Mallerstang, The Howgills, and the lovely Eden valley. The Nine Standards themselves are very tall stone cairns, of great age. One explanation of their origin was that when the marauding Scots came along the Eden Valley, they would see the columns on the skyline, and think that an English army was waiting for them!

Most visitors will come up from Kirkby Stephen along the Coast-to-Coast footpath, which has the advantage of a clear path all the way.

A shorter route can be made by parking at Lamps Moss on the highest point of the B6270 road. This saves almost 1000 ft of climbing, but the path is not very clear in some places, and is likely to be boggy even in Summer.
