To commemorate the SRSC BU13 team's third place finish in the 2003 Mayore Cup soccer tournament.
This is another in the series of soccer tournament caches. This weekend was the Mayore Cup held in Escondido. Evan’s BU13 team was entered and we made it to the semi-final game. We had our goalie taken out by a foul in one of the preliminary games, and another player was gone for the last day, so we played without any substitutions in hot weather. Regulation was 35-minute halves (as opposed to 25-minute halves for the preliminary games), and the game was tied at the end of regulation. The Valley Center Hurricanes scored first, with SRSC scoring next on an absolutely perfect corner kick by Evan. Then VC scored again and, near the end of regulation, a foul was called in the box and SRSC scored on a penalty kick. The game then went into overtime – two full 10-minute periods (no golden goal). Still tied after overtime, the game was decided on penalty shots. We lost it 3-1 with one to go. But our players were all stars and played well beyond themselves, especially considering our goalie was injured earlier in the tournament and we had no subs at all.

Epilog: I just found out that the Valley Center Hurricanes won the Championship against the Lake Elsinore Storm by a score of 4-2. We were so close! I also found out that VC had actually lost to LE on the field on Saturday, but LE's coach or manager (not sure which) had been shown the red card for mouthing off but refused to leave the field. This resulted in a forfeit of the game and VC ended up being the first place team in their bracket with LE being the second place team in their bracket. Since we were the second place team in our bracket, so we played VC in the semi-finals. VC then played LE in the Championship.
