Mt Leura (313m), and Mt Sugarloaf (a symmetrical cone, preserved by the National Trust) just across from the lookout, are scoria cones, and surround a 100m deep dry crater. Clover-shaped Lake Bullen Merri, a little further west, was formed from three submerged craters. At 66m it is one of Victoria’s deepest natural lakes; its water varies from fresh to brackish. Lake Gnotuk, close by, is another crater lake but is very salty.
This is the second in our Vulcan series of caches along the Volcanoes Discovery Trail, which we learned about while doing Derringer’s “What a Blast” cache. Brochures on the Trail can be obtained at the Colac, Hamilton, Port Fairy, Portland, Warrnambool, Tower Hill or Penshurst Visitor Information Centres in Victoria, and Millicent or Mt Gambier in South Australia.
Other maccamob caches on the Trail are:
Ready To Rock
Puddle Jumper
Rouse About
Tumultuous
Peking market Place
Vol-Au-Vent
Big Rock Candy Mountain
Mahout
What A Blast (Derringer), Elemental Forces (Derringer), Centenary (Team Piggy) and Towering Inferno (Alex) are also on the Trail.
Be wary of the rabbit holes and uneven ground covered in tussocks during your search. You are looking for a mega bison. Please ensure the container seal remains in place, and do not over-tighten the lid.
