Geocache Description:

******NOTE 9/13/05 The tag with the final coordinates seems to be missing. Use the alternate waypoint for the time being.******

Directions: Take Route 225 to Squannacook Road from West Groton center . You can start at the gate at N42 36.798/W71 38.944 (approx. 1.5 miles to cache) or drive a little further, turning right onto Shirley Street and start from a gate which is closer at N42 37.980/W71 39.958. Round trip from here is a little less than a mile.

Remember the Ole Swimmin' Hole where you used to swim as a kid! Here it is again - rope swing and all! This cache is accessible year round. but the best time to visit is on a hot summer day (duh)! Bring your bathing suit - the water is cool and refreshing!

This is a fairly easy two-part multi. The above coordinates will bring you to the Ole Swimmin' Hole. (Watch carefully for the correct narrow path when you get close). Stand directly under the rope swing platform (N42 38.051/W71 39.513) and look to your left. The decimal minutes for the final cache are written there, North first and then West.

N 42 38. ??? W 71 39.???

You now have a choice! You can swim first and then proceed on to the final location or you can find the cache and come back for a dip in the river!

Note: There is some bushwhacking involved for the last 20-25 yards but there is no need to cross the river!

The cache is a 2x8 glass olive jar covered with camo tape. The original contents include a logbook and pen, a bag of "eyes", a superball, finder's stickers (take one as a souvenir), a curly Q pencil, and a small dinosaur. The container is narrow so trade small.

This area is part of the Squannacook River Wildlife Management Area. The trails are flat and wide and ideally suited for trail bikes (the two-wheel, self-propelled GPS holder) or hiking.

UPDATE 4/1/05
The rope swing platform can become an “island” after heavy rains and/or snow melt when the river creates a temporary branch. For this reason I have created an alternate waypoint if the rope swing is inaccessible. Both waypoints will lead you to the final cache, but the alternate is more difficult to find.

DIRECTIONS TO ALTERNATE WAYPOINT Go to the frame of the zip line at N42 37.994 W071 39.462. The alternate waypoint coordinates are exactly 24 feet from the red screw.
