Aptly named, 40 Mile Point Light Station is located 40 miles SE of Old Mackinac Point and 40 miles NW of Thunder Bay. This lighthouse began its watch over Lake Huron's northern shoreline in November of 1896. At present, there is in operation a light sensor which signals the light to come on at dusk, 3 seconds on, 3 seconds off. In 1998 the property was conveyed to Presque Isle County by the US Coast Guard and together with the Forty Mile Point Lighthouse Society they have restored the lighthouse and other buildings on the property. A nautical musuem and gift shop has also been set up. You can go in and climb the lighthouse tower when open. At present, this is all open Memorial Day thru mid October, Sat and Sun, 12-4. Any other time you can stop and walk the grounds. On the grounds is a restored pilot house from the steamer "Calcite". The volunteers here have worked very hard to restore this area and all in all this cache site is a beautiful and interesting place to spend the afternoon with a picnic lunch and enjoy your surroundings. Permission to place this cache has been obtained from the Lighthouse Society. This cache consists of 4 area lighthouse pins, patriot and miscellaneous pins.
