Geocache Description:

The cache is located about 3/10ths of a mile from the road on the grounds of the original site of Fryeburg Academy. Although a short walk from the road, the trail has a steep elevation change.

Fryeburg Academy was established by the residents of Brownfield, Conway & Fryeburg at this location in 1792. Their goal was to establish a school specializing in the ‘classics’. While at this site on the side of Pine Hill, its reputation as a dedicated school of learning grew steadily. Many distinguished individuals were associated with the school. Its original charter was signed by John Hancock and in 1802 its Preceptor was a recent graduate of Dartmouth College, Daniel Webster. Its reputation as one of the finest academic institutions in the region continued to grow here until 1851 when a fire was started, possibly by disgruntled students. This ended the era of Fryeburg Academy’s existence at this site.
After the fire classes were held in different areas around the town of Fryeburg until 1853 when the Academy settled in the area where it presently exists . Today, the Academy is housed on a beautiful campus one mile east of this original site. The cache site became the agricultural and logging land of the Weston family and eventually was given to the town of Fryeburg by the Bradley’s.

The cache is in a quart-size plastic container of a light-green color. The original contents of the cache included a collection of various political campaign buttons due to the site’s historical involvement with John Hancock & Daniel Webster, two politicians from America’s past. As well you can find other trinkets such as: Oversized penny, wooden nickel and other mock coins, a pamphlet explaining topographical map symbols, various shoe laces, and a bead lizard.
