Geocache Description:

This is a virtual cache. In order to log this cache you must send an email stating: 1) The name on the old fountain in front of the building and, 2) How many students graduated in 1921 from the College. (The names are listed on the sidewalks).

Canehill College was the first degree granting institution in the state of Arkansas. The original building and several out buildings stand in this interesting community in Northwest Arkansas.

Cane Hill, Arkansas, was established in the early 1820s mostly by a group of people who came up the Arkansas River from Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama. In 1820 the land belonged to the Cherokees. In 1827 the land was forcibly taken, a new boundary was established and this part of Arkansas was officially opened for settlement.

This first group of white settlers were predominately Presbyterian and most had come from the Gasper River area in Kentucky where "The Great Revival" had centered.
The Cane Hill Congregation of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church was established August 30, 1828. The current building for that church is a short distance away, in front of the College.

This group of people soon established a college, Cane Hill College, which was the first higher education institution to grant a degree in Arkansas. That school was closed and moved to Clarksville, AR, after the state university opened in Fayetteville. That college is now known as the University of the Ozarks.

On the Northeast corner of the fence there are stone grinding wheels. These wheels may be from the nearby Truesdale-Pyeatte & Moore Mill cache.
